Enough is Enough

Just watched Chris Wise's excellent webinar on the Institution of Structural Engineers website, really inspirational stuff, he goes into detail about how we can save vast amounts of co2 by reducing the unnecessarily large safety factors we use when designing structures and how the Structural Engineering industry has failed to address this.

Chris discusses that the Structural Engineering profession needs more creative people to come up with new solutions to creating more sustainable structures, Artists rather than Mathematicians, computers to do the math and creative people to come up with ingenious and enterprising solutions. Sounds about right to me, the Industry really doesn't promote creative's, it's all stuck in the past, needs have changed and we all must be more creative and innovate.

I'm not sure how these creative new engineers will fit in with the existing industry, perhaps they can't all be put in nice neat boxes, I have a feeling that they will define themselves rather than be defined.

Eurocodes

We are currently transferring over to Eurocodes at the moment and are at approximately 85% complete in this process. When designing short span steel beams to EC3, you can reduce the amount of steel required by up to 40% in some situations, which is good for builder's backs and the environment.

Why I set up Beam Calcs Ltd

To help people basically.

To enable the little guy, your average homeowner, builder, architect to receive good quality structural calculations at a good price within a reasonable timescale.

To reduce carbon emissions I try to reduce the amount of steel used in projects by specifying timber instead of steel (where possible), utilising masonry to provide structural stability instead of using steel columns and also by careful design and detailing.

Beam Calcs Ltd Progress

How is Beam Calcs Ltd progressing,

Although a tough year we have almost managed to double our monthly turnovers compared to this time last year - despite the recession.

Growth through word of mouth and also our great website www.beamcalcs.com have enabled us to increase our workload and also obtain new exciting repeat clients.

This year should see further growth for us driven in part by our new instant calcs feature. A number of our competitors have ceased trading and we will be in a strong position as the economy recovers from the recession.
